Interdisciplinary expertise where business meets IT

This programme provides you with:

• theoretical and methodological basis for dealing with key issues such as data science, digital transformation and innovation, processes and business models as well as solutions for a sustainable society.
   
• education in the interdisciplinary field of information systems, which has its roots in computer science, economics, and business management.
   
• the key capability to bridge business management and computer science that is often required in the labour market.
   
• A sound know-how of marketing concepts and methods is crucial for management and economics students and an indispensable part of any good manager’s toolset. Case studies, business projects with companies, and guest lecturers from the corporate world give you insights about relevant.

The programme is organised by the Cologne Institute for Information Systems (CIIS). The CIIS has achieved remarkable recognition in recent ranking surveys. According to the WirtschaftsWoche (WIWO) ranking, a leading German business magazine, professors Wolf Ketter, Christoph Rosenkranz and Detlef Schoder are all among the top 5% of all business researchers in German-speaking countries. Furthermore, according to the recently published 2024 ranking by the Association of Information Systems (AIS), the CIIS is among the top-ranked business informatics research institutions worldwide (ranked 1st in Germany and among the top 4 in Europe).

The Master's programme in Information Systems at the University of Cologne teaches how IT systems are designed, analysed and used in companies and organisations. The programme deepens both business and IT skills and covers topics such as data analysis, digital innovations and business models. Various specialisations, such as ‘Business Analytics and Data Science’ or ‘Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship’, enable students to develop their own individual profile. The aim is to prepare students for challenging tasks at the interface between IT and management.

A Master's degree in Information Systems opens up a wide range of career opportunities at the interface between IT and management. Graduates often work in areas such as IT consulting, project management, data analysis, digital transformation or in the development and management of information systems in companies.
